Become a Substitute

Welcome to the Substitute Online Application Process

There are three pathways to becoming a substitute teacher:

  • Local Substitute Permit– for applicants who have at least 48 credit hours of college coursework
  • State Substitute Permit for applicants who have completed a full educator preparation program that led to a teaching certificate but don’t have the experience to renew their regular certificate
  • Paraprofessional Substitute Permit- for applicants hired as para professionals, only valid in specific school district requesting the permit

The steps to be considered for Substitute teaching with Kearney Public Schools are outlined below.

  1. Application – Complete the online Substitute Application on the Job Postings Website.

  2. Certification – A Nebraska Teaching Certificate, Substitute Teaching Certificate or Local Substitute Certificate.

  3. Background check – receive clearance through the background check process.

  4. Substitute Onboarding - Once the background checks have been completed and a certificate has been approved, a substitute onboarding will be scheduled with Human Resources.

If you have questions regarding substitute teaching or where you are in the process, please contact KPS Human Resources: Dellene Bosard at dbosard@kearneycats.com
